The Role of a Friend

by - Sunday, August 03, 2014

As young adults we rely on our friends like one would a family. Through friendship they provide different qualities that we are seeking, but what about what we need in order to grow. Are our friends impacting our growth?

Since I’ve graduated from college, I’ve started to see how having yes people in my life hasn’t helping me grow. There was no motivation or challenge there to help me, and now those are qualities I seek out. I want to be around people who will challenge me and hold me accountable in my personal and professional life.

Having friends that listen, entertain, and support us is just a portion of what we need. We should have people who will push us forward and motivate us to continue on. If I’m not doing what I need to do, then I want someone to get me back on track or challenging me to do better because that’s what real friends do.

The roles of being a friend is complex, but when one is around the right people it’s not hard to handle. I want my friends to succeed just like they want the same of me. So if that means we have to be accountable for one another then that’s the challenge we’re up for a family.
